The Lost Futures Exchange is a residency project where the artist gathers stories, dreams and remembrances of a place in central Wellington. Working as an artist in residence, Mark Antony Smith is working with other residents in the new Biz Dojo offices at 3 Market Lane talking to those who have had a connection with the site now and in the past, collecting stories in written, drawn and audio/video recorded forms. These records will culminate in a multi-media model of stories, dreams and animation.
“I will collect and interpret and possibly interrupt,” says Mark Antony Smith. “For me memory has a disruptive influence on the architecture and spaces we occupy. I use ‘ghosting’ as my framework to look through windows, peer into the past and imagine the future that never was. Ghosting means I am here now but reacting to the contexts of my memories. I see signs for places that no longer exist, recall other usages of spaces, different road layouts, and people I talked to that are no longer here.”
Examples of previous work from Mark Antony Smith can be found here. Mark Antony Smith’s residency is part of the Biz Dojo’s Collider programme.
This project is also being supported by Urban Dream Brokerage’s 2018 peer to peer mentoring programme with Mark Antony working with theatremaker Leo-Gene Peters, of company A Slightly Isolated Dog who are currently on residence at Creative HQ.
